by stephenw20 inmy dad asked the co about this one.

Hi all,
In our cong. the elder who was the WT conductor was giving the public talk on the particular week (in March/April 1985) when the study article on masturbation.
The elder replacing him that day to conduct the study (and not noted for being able to string 2 articulate sentences together) opened with the remarks. "I was more than happy to step in for Bro. XXX today but to my horror of all studies I get to conduct it is this one." he continued "But I'll be relieved when I've got this masturbation over with!"
It was about 15 mins before any sense of order came back to the proceedings.

Watchtower Reprints Query
by Mr Angry inhi to all again.. about a year before i packed it in back in late '90 the wts reprinted (in english in the uk) the wt bound volumes from 1960 - 1979.. in view of the (even then) dodgy information (e.g.
the 1975 issue in the 1968 bound volume) i wondered why they did this.
ok so the internet wasn't around but i would have thought that the last thing the wts would do was draw attention to issues they would rather forget.

Hello again,
No I'm not Mr Wright's Radio 2 irate on air companion. But it's my inspiration. My gut reaction when any facet of my life is affected by having been a JW is anger so hence: Mr Angry.
Rick (Not angry at this exact moment)
To all non British posters: Log on to www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 between 1400 and 1700 GMT and you may just catch the real Mr Angry.
To all UK posters: Steve was funnier on Radio1. Although being over 30 myself I've caught myself listening to Radio2 recently.

Hi to all again.
About a year before I packed it in back in late '90 the WTS reprinted (in English in the UK) the WT bound volumes from 1960 - 1979.
In view of the (even then) dodgy information (e.g. the 1975 issue in the 1968 bound volume) I wondered why they did this.
OK so the internet wasn't around but I would have thought that the last thing the WTS would do was draw attention to issues they would rather forget. Particularly to those who came in post '75.
At the time those of us who did not own these volumes jumped excitedly at the chance of owing these hitherto out of print books. But in the light of the thread relating to burning / destroying or keeping old WTS literature to embarrass the dubs, I am curious why the org would take a backward step like this even some 10-12 years ago.
Did this happen in the States / Canada / Australia or indeed anywhere else? Any ideas?Rick

Pink Songbooks - Green Bibles
by nicolaou inthose of us who've been around long enough will understand the title.
what we are looking for here are examples of the society's lack of taste.. for example, i'm sure our kingdom hall wasn't the only one in the 70's with dark brown carpeting that rose halfway up the walls and a nice trendy rubber plant in the corner of the platform!.

Hello again all.
Not just the awful KH decor and book covers but the illustrations inside.
The characters in the Bible story book had the most hideous taste in clohtes in my opinion. No wonder God destoyed the world in the flood if people were going about like that. Also (I think it was story 10 or 11) the hideously coloured rainbow behind Noah? Either the artist was colour blind or they were short on ink at the printing room that day.
In the orange "Paradise" book. Does anyone remember the picture of the man holding up a naked baby to be sacrificed to some guy on a throne with a cows head on? That scared me shitless at our group study. Come to think of it, most of Mad Freddie Franz's books were full of surreal pictures!
Our Kingdom Hall in the 70's had a lime green carpet with plastic neon orange chairs, the sort you get in bus station waiting rooms that are designed to give minimum comfort no matter your posture. The library not only looked like a crayola box but stank of piss owing to the damp in the cupboard the books were kept. The damp also affected the piano used for songs before the advent of the sound system. It was always off key. At least thats what the bonkers sister who played it said!
Every time I smell a damp stale urine smell I am reminded of the Kingdom Hall. Purely co-incidental of course.

What would you have done without the WT?
by expatbrit inimagine that you had never heard of the watchtower.
imagine that your life and that of your families had never been influenced by wt teachings.. i know for a fact that the wt's philosophy on further education contributed to my not achieving what i should have at school.
this is not to shirk the responsibility for my grades; ultimately they were my responsibility.

To Princecharmant
Yes thank you! Most uplifting.
"why don't you get over it and stop whining"
That kind of advice is in the same league as the elders who state: "Feeling suicidally depressed? Never mind. Just get out in the ministry and you'll feel all better!"
Some of the things that happened to us a JW's are so life changing that "just getting over it" is not on the cards. Sometimes serious professional assistance and even medication can be required. NO-ONE is qualified to say how another feels emotionally regarding leaving the JW's. I've been out for a decade and sometimes I still scream inside at what they did to me! Many bridges are burned when one joins the Watchtower. Family bonds can be broken that can never be repaired. In my wife's family people have gone to their death with things said and deeds done that would have not have happened without the interference of the JW's.
I have for years analysed my life decisions and can honestly say that the consequences of being a JW have caused me the most problems. Career, family relationships, ability to deal with everyday problems have all been adversely affected by being a JW.
I have failed so far to be "what I could have been" because of the WT. Conversely everything I have achieved has been IN SPITE of the WT.

Do the Governing Body really believe that Armaggeddon is just around the corner?
The r&f will accept any old rubbish the Watchtower prints, but at the very top of the org, are they really convinced in their belief that the end is coming?I’m interested in all your views on this but allow me to elucidate my thinking.
The most recent example of a date “going wrong” was the 1975 farce. The r&f swallowed the reasoning without a seconds hesitation that the end was coming that year. But I wonder what the thoughts of the GB were in the mid 60’s when the information came out. Did they truly think this was “new light” as revealed by God or did they rub their collective hands in anticipation of a decade worth of hysteria ahead which would rake in millions in book and magazine sales. IMO I think the latter.
Ray Franz documents clearly in “Crisis of Conscience” the disagreement in the GB in the 70’s regarding time prophecies particularly 1975 and “the far more fundamental date of 1914”. So clearly if the absolute top of the org. do not even believe in their own doctrine how much longer do they think the r&f will last until they realise it’s a sham.
Therefore IMO the Governing Body not only don’t really believe that Armaggeddon is coming but are conciously aware of the fact. Furthermore they realise the absolute importance of keeping Armaggeddon as a carrot dangling in front of the ordinary JW’s to prevent the steady stream of people leaving becoming a major flood.
Which brings me to another point, will the GB have to set another tentative date in the (relatively) near future as the likely start for “the end”? It seems to me either they must or the entire faith will fall apart within a couple of decades.
So do they really believe in it? What do you think?

It might sound strange I know but that’s just how it is at the moment.
Since I wrote my story last summer I have done extensive research online and find my self absolutely incredulous that I actually belonged to the Watchtower organisation and thought I believed in it as well. But then, I had no choice being raised in it.
Well anyway love to all and you’ll probably find I’ll venture an opinion or two in the coming weeks.
